This is a scratchbuilt diorama using the new Games Workshop LOTR figures, and a few other bits and pieces. Arwen was pretty substantially altered from the standing version GW produces to ride a substitute Asfaloth (from the GW Balthasar Gelt model)

The "horse water" summoned by Arwen in the movie, Elrond/Gandalf in the book was sculpted w/ Woodland Scenics Foam Putty and a bunch of misc. GW plastic horses that I had around.

I sculplted a saddle and skirt for the Arwen/Asfaloth model using milliputt epoxy putty. The river is made of plaster that I poured and shaped on top of the foam board. Because plaster is wet, but will hold it's shape, you can "sculpt" waves in it.

I'm really pleased w/ how the water turned out ... it looks very foamy and has a lot of motion. This is probably my favorite picture of the set. The motion of the ringwraiths and the water looks very natural to me.

The GW ringwraiths are very cool ... 3 different rider/horse pairs w/ 3 different sword arms allows you to create up to 9 different models.

When I poured the plaster, I placed the bases for the riders so that there would be places for them in the final piece. A little water helped me soften the plaster to remove the bases.

Because of the bevel on the bases, I had to do a little filing to get the bases to snap in easily. I used Vallejo paints for the riders. Burnt Umber for the horses and a mixture of Prussian Blue and Black for the robes followed by multiple black washes.

I did the metal NMM (non-metal metallic) but then brushed on a little silver because the models were pretty dark w/out it. I think it came out pretty nicely.

Note how the riders on the end nearest the "horse water" are rearing up while the others charge across the ford.

This shot shows all 9 riders and the bank. I used a bunch of different model railroad ballast to form the path leading up to the ford.

I probably spent 40-50 hours on this piece. It is easily my favorite diorama to date. I think I have the LOTR movie trailer memorized at this point.
